Director of Research at CNRS (UMR6566, Rennes), and Contractual Teacher at Panthéon-Sorbonne University (Paris 1) and Rennes 2, Dr Sophie Méry defended in 1991 her Doctorate (PhD), and in 2009 her habilitation (HDR) at Paris 1, Oriental Archaeology Department.
She is accreditated for the direction of Doctoral Students.
Among Research administration, general-interest functions, and editing activities Dr Méry is Member of Reviewing Committee Journal Paléorient, and Reviewer for Arabian Archaeology and Epigraphy, the Proceedings of the Seminar for Arabian Studies, le Journal des Africanistes, le Journal des Américanistes, Technique et Cultures.
Among several Research consortium she leads, she is the Director of the French Archaeological Mission to the UAE (excavated sites in Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Ra’s al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain Emirates: Akab, Bithnah, Hili Tomb N, Masafi, Mleiha, Umm al Quwain 2).
She conducted the excavations Suwayh SWY-3 EBA settlement (Ja’alan, Oman), Hili N EBA collective Tomb (Abu Dhabi, UAE), Akab Neolithic Ritual Site (Umm al-Quwain, UAE), Umm al-Quwain UAQ 2 Neolithic Settlement and Graveyard (UAE).
She contributed to excavations in Pakistan (Nausharo, Baluchistan), Oman (Ras’s al-Jins RJ-2 and RJ-3, Ra's al hadd HD1 settlements, Suwayh SWY-2 settlements), U.A.E. (Hili 8 settlement, Hili Tomb M, Hili North Tomb A), and Iraq (Kheit Qasim Graveyard, Haradum Fort).
Dr Méry published a hundred or research articles and chapter books, plus 8 books as an author or scientific Editor; and organized workshops, sessions and conference in France, Kuwait and India.
Among grants & distinctions, note the 1999 First CLIO Award for Archaeological Research outside France, and the 2009 "50 years of Archaeology in the U.A.E. Award".
Dr Méry was in 2016 part of the Abu Dhabi Archaeology Review at the request of the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA). She is nominated to the Abu Dhabi Archaeology Committee from 2016
